As previously communicated, two new professional practice courses (Professional
Practice in Canada, and Professional Practice Management), are now available
through the RAIC Centre for Architecture at Athabasca University. For students
already enrolled in the existing MG stream of Syllabus professional practice courses,
it will generally make more sense to continue to completion of this cycle of courses.
Students not yet enrolled in professional practice may now prefer to start with the
new courses at the RAIC Centre for Architecture.
Two technical courses are now very close to completion, and will open for
registration in the next few months. Seven other new technical courses will follow in
2012. These courses will gradually replace existing Syllabus courses as they
become available on-line through the RAIC Centre for Architecture at Athabasca.
Preliminary work is now underway to start development of new History and Theory
courses as well.
On October 23, a meeting of Syllabus design studio coordinators was held in Calgary
to discuss current studio operations, and to continue work on updating of the studio
module content, work being carried out by consultant Jon Hobbs with input from
coordinators. The goal is to have completed the design studio module updating by
the end of this year.
The Calgary meeting also included a status update by Regina coordinator Bob Croft
on the experience in Saskatchewan of using Adobe Pro-Connect software to link
together students from Regina, Saskatoon and Estevan. As we prepare to extend the
use of Adobe Pro Connect across the Syllabus studio network, we will be holding a
follow-up meeting in Victoria on February 26 to review the updated studio module
content and to become familiar with using Adobe Pro Connect software in a studio
context. This is with a view to running similar pilots across the country to link in
students in remote locations to our physical network of design studios.
We remain committed to maintaining continuity for the Syllabus program as the
renewal process continues. On this count, we express our appreciation to the
coordinators, mentors and examiners who have made it possible for us to offer a full
slate of courses for the fall term, as well as the dedication of Syllabus National Office
staff to ensuring smooth ongoing operation of the Syllabus program. We extend best
wishes to you for the Holiday Season, and we will be back in touch with further news
prior to the start of the term beginning March 1, 2012.
Best regards,
